View looking west on Sansom Street at the corner of Broad showing partially demolished building behind wooden fence. Building, formerly a furnace manufactory, was used as Civil War recruiting station. Signs on building read: Headquarters 183rd Regt. P.V. 4th Union League Col. Geo. P. McLean. Groundbreaking for the Union League, a club established to raise money and recruits for the Union cause, took place on March 1, 1864 and building opened on May 11, 1865. Image also includes Academy of Natural Sciences and residences on south side of 1400 block of Sansom Street.
