Moran, John, 1831-1903, photographer.
603 Penn St. -- 1868. [graphic].
Philadelphia, 1868.
Inscribed title.
Exterior view of a four story, brick building flanked by a liquor store and a tavern. The front door is open, along with one of the cellar doors. The first floor is faced with large stone blocks above which brick facing continues to the roof.
The address of an adjacent business (left) is 604, which means the main subject of the photograph is 602, on the west side of the block, not the east side as indicated by Moran's inscription. Another image in the collection, 1717.F.63, depicts the west side of Penn Street below South Street, and the properties depicted are not the same. This image probably depicts 602 Swanson Street, which is directly behind 603 Penn Street. Two other properties are partially visible, which are probably Frank Bannigan, wines and liquors, at 604 Swanson Street, and Jacob Hageman's tavern at the corner of Swanson and South Streets.
Originally part of an album of seventy eight views taken by John Moran entitled "A collection of photographic views in Philadelphia & its vicinity taken in the year 1868-1869" (Philadelphia, 1870).
