Arcadia caption text: Established to provide support for the Union cause during the Civil War through its publications, fundraising, and troop recruiting efforts, the Union League erected a clubhouse, designed by Philadelphia architect John Fraser, on the southwest corner of Broad and Sansom streets between 1864 and 1865. After the war, the Union League remained involved in both local and national politics and counted among its members numerous politicians and prominent businessmen. In the mid 1890s, soon after this photograph was taken, the Union League began expanding its property westward, and by the early 20th century, it occupied the entire block from Broad to Fifteenth streets.
