Dialogues with Darwin: An Exhibition of Historical Documents and Contemporary Art

Darwin's Journeys: The Making of a Naturalist

Darwin’s five-year voyage around the world, from 1831 to 1836, was a coming-of-age journey that changed him forever, both personally and professionally. On board HMS Beagle, he found his true calling in the study of nature and embarked on a life-long dialogue with its “endless forms most beautiful.”

This section opens a window onto Darwin’s personal journey as a naturalist as well as his meticulous gathering and recording of scientific data—during and after the Beagle voyage. The books and letters provide examples of his wide-ranging observations, musings, questions, and experiments, revealing how he accumulated astounding amounts of evidence to support his complex ideas and theories.
