Flies in Thomas Hunt Morgan’s laboratory 1

The fruit flies in T. H. Morgan’s Columbia University laboratory were fed rotting bananas and bred in small containers like these. Fruit flies were the perfect research subject. Already adapted to scavenging human food, they were easy to keep alive in the laboratory. Their rapid reproduction and short lifespan allowed researchers to quickly learn about inheritance over many generations.
