Darwin to Lyell, 28 March 1859

This letter to eminent geologist Charles Lyell reveals that Darwin was thoughtful and careful in presenting his work. He not only sought Lyell’s opinion on the title for his upcoming book, but wrote of his concern about whether Lyell’s publisher, John Murray, would find it too controversial to publish. In the post script, Darwin wrote that the book “only give[s] facts, & such conclusions from them, as seem to me fair.” Murray published this book and all subsequent works by Darwin.
