From Darwin's Journeys: The Making of a Naturalist

Darwin, Power of Movement
The dotted lines on these charts represent the movements of plants, which Darwin traced over minutes, hours, and days. With home-made devices in his own greenhouse, he recorded movements imperceptible to the casual eye. Such experiments, along with correspondence to and from other scientists around the world, replaced his earlier travel to faraway places. However, the subjects he undertook in England were no less grand than those he explored when on the Beagle.
