Gray, Natural Selection Not Inconsistent with Natural Theology

American botanist Asa Gray argued in this reprinted article that there was room for God’s purpose in Darwin’s order of nature. He believed that the Creator guided evolution towards its pinnacle—the creation of humans. Though privately Darwin expressed reservations about Gray’s theological interpretations, Gray championed Darwin’s Origin of Species in the United States and negotiated its official U.S. publication. Darwin was so pleased with Gray’s original article that he paid to have it reprinted in Britain in order to promote his ideas there.
