Adam Gopnik at the Free Library

November 24, 2009

Horace W. Goldsmith Foundation Lecture

On November 24, 1859—exactly 150 years ago—Charles Darwin’s landmark On The Origin of Species was published. To mark this occasion the Free Library of Philadelphia has invited New Yorker writer Adam Gopnik to talk about his current book Angels and Ages as part of its fall Author Events series.  This event is co-sponsored by the APS Museum.

Gopnik takes the coincidence that Abraham Lincoln and Charles Darwin were born on the same date—February 12, 1809—as the impetus for a collection of essays that etch vivid intellectual portraits of each man.  His book is a witty and elegant exploration of the cultural impact of these two great men. The Christian Science Monitor says “Gopnik casts fresh and honest light on two figures distorted by years of excessive comment, quotation and ideological appropriation.”

A contributor to the New Yorker for over two decades, Gopnik is a three-time winner of the National Magazine Award.
