Video Production Teacher Training (in collaboration with WHYY)

March 20, 2010

Teachers participating in the WHYY Video Production Teacher Training will learn to teach their students the skills of digital video production and non-linear editing, and receive tips for integrating these skills in existing curricula. Participants can be teachers of any subject area looking for a new outlet for student expression or educators at non-profits and community-based organizations.  Classroom video production will be student-centered. As such, participating teachers will learn to guide their students through hands-on lessons, as the students develop their own voices as videographers. Teachers will also learn basic camera skills, as well as editing with FinalCut software.

Goals
Through this project, local teachers will:
• Learn to instruct their students in hands-on video production, and assist them as they create a short video piece on Darwin and evolution for a WHYY/APS Museum student video contest (contest entry is not required in order sign up for this teacher training).
• Develop tools for teaching team-building, organizational, social, creative, and leadership skills.
• Forge stronger relationships with their local public broadcaster and the APS Museum, two valuable educational resources.

Course Overview
This is an 8-hour course taught at the WHYY studios and the APS Museum. The course is taught by a WHYY Learning Lab instructor with particular expertise in teaching youth to express themselves through digital video. Additionally, an APS Museum educator will offer an introduction to the museum’s current exhibition, Dialogues with Darwin. Teachers will have an opportunity to practice shooting video footage inside the exhibition and learn about the WHYY/APS Museum student video contest.
